The Wreck of the Rebecca.
This exhibition includes artefacts from the shipwreck Rebecca which wrecked on Tasmania’s west coast near a beach that bares her name.
In 1853 the barque Rebecca was travelling from London to Sydney via Bass Strait to deliver wine and beer, but got caught by the Roaring Forties, blown off course and smashed into a reef between Temma (then known as Whales Head) and Couta Rocks. When the ship wrecked the captain and crew thought perhaps they were on on King Island. This was due to the chronometer displaying a false reading that placed them 200 miles offshore. Luckily they were found by a dog that turned out to be owned by surveyor Gordon Burgess who brought the survivors 50 miles north to Woolnorth
